.

The idea for Lambda Theta Alpha began in the late 1970s, when colleges and universities experienced an influx of Latino enrollment; the organization came into being at Kean University in 1975 with Lambda Theta Alpha's seventeen founding mothers, who were of Latin, Caribbean and European descent.

The phrase "Latin by Tradition, not by Definition" is commonly used by members of the sorority to acknowledge that while their traditions and the majority of the founders were Latina, the sorority caters to the Universal Woman and is open to ladies of all races not just Latinas.
