The church was founded in 1991 by Paul de Jong and his wife Maree, who had previously been Associate Pastors of Christian Life Centre Sydney (now part of Hillsong Church

). Initially meeting in rented venues, the church grew rapidly to over 500 people.

In 2001, the church purchased an office and warehouse complex which was converted into a 950-seat auditorium. By late 2002, the total weekend attendance over four services had risen to over 3000, and two new congregations had been established in other parts of Auckland. In 2006 and 2009, three more venues were added. LIFE now numbers over 8,000 people meeting in six centres across the city..

The six locations are:
  • Central, at Mt Eden
  • South, at Mangere
  • West, at Massey
  • Coast, at Orewa
  • East, at Botany Downs
  • North, at Snells Beach


In 2010, LIFE Leadership College completed its merger with Lifeway College, based in Snells Beach. Along with this, Lifeway church was merged with LIFE, and became LIFE's sixth location, known now as LIFE North.

Youth Ministry

LIFE Youth consists of three different age group ministries. These consist of:
  • Fuse - school years 6 and 7. Fuse runs during all morning services at LIFE, as well as monthly events held on a Friday evening.
  • EPIC - high school aged. EPIC is split into three different locations, EPIC Coast, EPIC Central and EPIC South And is run every Friday from 7pm.
  • LOUD - ages 18-25+. LOUD is held every Sunday night at LIFE Central, with a combination of events and services throughout the year.


As well as these regular services and events, LIFE Youth also holds combined nights, called Massive Nights, throughout the year.

Conferences

LIFE runs four national conferences each year. These are:
  • Life Conference A conference for the whole church, for both church leaders and congregation. A full day of specialised workshops are held to cater to specific areas of ministry, as well as four combined night sessions and two full days.
  • Detonate On the Saturday prior to Life Conference, LIFE also holds Detonate, a kids conference, including a Family Fun Night to conclude the day.
  • Sistas Women's Conference Each year LIFE hosts Sistas Women's Conference, seeing thousands of women in attendance.
  • Get Smart Youth Conference Every July, Get Smart Youth Conference takes place in both Auckland and Christchurch.
