Kemo is home to the rebel group Kemo People's Liberation Front (KPLF). Not military in nature, KPLF has been involved with campaigns in the south of the province to limit the spread of HIV/AIDS in animist communities where multiple simultaneous sexual partners are the rule for wealthy men. The KPLF has also been linked with the killing of mountain gorillas for food, especially in times of hunger. Kemo is also home to the Bugara or Kemone Fa Fa style of music.
