Kabete and its environs is inhabited mostly by Kikuyu people. Kabete location has a total population of 29308 (1999 census http://www.worldbank.org/research/povertymaps/kenya/ch5.3.1.pdf).

A study in 2005 revealed that Kabete constituency has the lowest poverty rate in Kenya http://www.ilri.org/ilripubaware/uploaded%20files/TS_051102_001_TheGreatDivide.pdf. However, most residents live off farming and are not particularly rich.
