Born in Chicago, Illinois, Gorman was ordained a priest for the Chicago Archdiocese on May 1, 1956. On February 16, 1988, he was appointed as an Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago and Titular Bishop of Catula by Blessed Pope John Paul II. He was ordained to the episcopacy on April 11, 1988 by the late former Cardinal Archbishop of Chicago, His Eminence
