, Green Bay, Wisconsin, United States. Heller graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee in 1979 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He served as a staff artist/editorial cartoonist for the West Bend Daily News from 1980 to 1985. He joined the Green Bay Press-Gazette in 1985 as its first full-time editorial cartoonist.

Heller is self-syndicated through his own syndication company, Heller Syndication. His cartoons are distributed to approximately 350 newspapers. He is the most self-syndicated editorial cartoonist in the nation. His work regularly is reprinted in USA Today, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Newsweek, and the Los Angeles Times.
