For years, the University has been playing a major role in the educational, cultural and economic life of Northeast Region of China. In the beginning decade of the new century, the University is committed to achieving the status as one of the leading institutions for higher education well known in China and around the world.

Facilities

Facilities include, first of all, a fast gigabit computer network. Fiber optic cables connect all the campuses, and over 20,000 computers are hooked up to the network. Faculty, staff and students can have easy access to the internet/intranet anywhere - in classrooms, dormitories or at home, enjoying online education and office automation. But the university is yet to install a wireless network unlike most other universities of its size in China. Furthermore at peak times the network grinds to a halt as there isn't enough bandwidth to meet capacity, seriously hampering online education.

Jilin University has established worldwide exchange and cooperation ties with more than 130 universities, colleges, and research institutes in 40 countries/districts. The faculty members have visited abroad thousands of times, while more than 500 foreign experts have been invited to attend international conferences, give lectures, or do joint researches on campus. Over 1200 foreign students are currently enrolled in Jilin University. However recently, Jilin University has gained somewhat of a reputation amongst foreign teachers In Changchun, over several contractual issues where the university failed to pay its foreign teachers. The total amount owed amounts to over 200,000 yuan.

Life for International students

Each year, the University hosts many academic and cultural events including seminars, forums, speech competitions and, performances on various topics and subjects. 150 student groups and organizations enrich campus life with colorful activities.
