Set in Manhattan, the story follows Jeremy Jones, a young Jewish boy who plays the cello as he pursues his love with his school mate, the graceful dancer Susan Rollins, during their sophomore-year at the High School of Music and Art. As Jeremy learns life lessons from his wise and intelligent cello teacher, Susan begins to feel the connection between herself and Jeremy, but Susan's move to Detroit could ruin their relationship.
