In the 1980s, he formed the band Orange with Nicolas Godin, Alex Gopher and Xavier Jamaux. He studied mathematics and physics and taught at a college in Paris, before embarking on a career as a professional musician. Since 1995, he has been one of two members of the electronic band Air, the other is Nicolas Godin.

Jean-Benoît Dunckel, a mathematician studying in Versailles (France), first began a working partnership with Nicolas Godin in the indie band Orange. When Orange failed to make headway, the two continued working together as Air, specializing in retro-flavored electronic music.
