McConaughy was born in New York on October 21, 1887. He completed his bachelor's degree from Yale University

Academic career

McConaughy taught English and education at Bowdoin College from 1909 to 1915. He was a professor of education at Dartmouth College from 1918 to 1925. He also was President of Knox College and Wesleyan University

Politics

McConaughy was a Republican. He was lieutenant governor of Connecticut from 1938 to 1941. He then served in other positions. He became the Governor of Connecticut in 1947. During his term, legislation was constituted that subsidized local bonds for housing construction. Twenty million dollar were granted for school construction that benefited rural areas over larger cities. He died on March 7, 1948, aged 60, before finishing his term.
