James studied briefly at MIT before beginning his acting career. Eckhouse is Jewish. Eckhouse lives and works in Los Angeles. He and his wife, Sheila Keliher Walsh, have two sons, James Gabriel Eckhouse (Gabe) and John Alexander Eckhouse (Zander). Gabe is a former student at Deep Springs College
