Iver B. Neumann

 and has been research director at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs since 2008.



Neumann obtained his first DPhil in Politics from Oxford University in 1991. His dissertation was entitled 'The Russian Debate about Europe - 1800- 1991'. He later pursued a second DPhil, this time in Social Anthropology at the University of Oslo. In 2009, he defended his dissertation 'Diplomats and Diplomacy: An Anthropological View'.



Neumann was editor of the Norwegian IR journal Internasjonal politikk from 1993 to 1995, and Cooperation and Conflict: Nordic journal of international relations from 1999 to 2003.



Neumann became the focus of public debate in early August 2010 for criticizing the local opposition to a new main power supply running through the fjord area of Hardanger

. This created an outcry in Western Norway, and Neumann's claim was dismissed as "arrogance" by the leader of the conservative party and as "nonsense" by a leading economist and a fellow political scientist.
