 and in addition to clinical and teaching duties conducts research in biomaterials. His past work includes the development of a bioengineered artificial cornea which can be used to treat patients with severe corneal damage.

In addition to the diagnosis and treatment of ocular disorders, Dr. Schwab has an interest in comparative ophthalmology, examining the visual systems of animals such as stomatopods, mysid shrimp, and sharks. His work on the effects of wood pecking on woodpeckers was honored with an Ig Nobel Prize
