A metal , is an element, compound, or alloy that is a good conductor of both electricity and heat. Metals are usually malleable and shiny, that is they reflect most of incident light...

s. Replica
Replica
A replica is a copy closely resembling the original concerning its shape and appearance. An inverted replica complements the original by filling its gaps. It can be a copy used for historical purposes, such as being placed in a museum. Sometimes the original never existed. For example, Difference...

Composite material
Composite materials, often shortened to composites or called composition materials, are engineered or naturally occurring materials made from two or more constituent materials with significantly different physical or chemical properties which remain separate and distinct at the macroscopic or...

Catalysis
Catalysis is the change in rate of a chemical reaction due to the participation of a substance called a catalyst. Unlike other reagents that participate in the chemical reaction, a catalyst is not consumed by the reaction itself. A catalyst may participate in multiple chemical transformations....

Electroplating
Electroplating is a plating process in which metal ions in a solution are moved by an electric field to coat an electrode. The process uses electrical current to reduce cations of a desired material from a solution and coat a conductive object with a thin layer of the material, such as a metal...

Plating
Plating is a surface covering in which a metal is deposited on a conductive surface. Plating has been done for hundreds of years, but it is also critical for modern technology...

. For replication of through-pores, a cathode film is deposited on one side of the membrane. The membrane is immersed in a metal salt solution. The cathode film is negatively charged with respect to the anode which is placed on the opposite side of the membrane. The positive metal ions are pulled toward the cathode where they catch electrons and precipitate as a compact metal film. During electro-deposition the channels fill gradually with metal. The length of the nano wires is controlled by the deposition time. Rapid deposition leads to polycrystalline wires. Slow deposition leads to single crystalline wires. A free standing replica is obtained by removing the template after deposition of a bearing film on the anode side of the membrane.
Interpenetrating wire networks are fabricated by electro-deposition in multi-angle track-etched membranes. Free-standing three-dimensional networks with tunable complexity and interwire connectivity are obtained.
Segmented nanowires are fabricated by alternating the polarity during electro-deposition. The segment length is adjusted by the pulse duration. In this way electrical, thermal, and optical properties can be tuned.
