Authentic English Translation

The Authentic English translation of the above song is as follows:

"Bharatha is like the face beauteous of Earth clad in wavy seas;

Deccan is her brow crescent-like on which the fragrant 'Tilak'

is the blessed Dravidian land.

Like the fragrance of that 'Tilak' plunging the world in joy

supreme reigns Goddess Tamil with renown spread far and wide.

Praise unto You, Goddess Tamil, whose majestic

youthfulness, inspires awe and ecstasy."

Original Version

But the official version is a subject matter of criticism since it materially varies from the original poem by the author. Critics say that the official version is a politicised one which has altered sensitive information. Many feel that no one has the right to alter the text of popular poets. The original text is as follows:

From the above one may realise that the poem has been subjected to heavy alteration. Many lines have been rearranged and some lines have been removed. This in turn has resulted in the loss of the original phonetics and rhythm envisaged by the author. Many Tamil scholars feel that this has brought disrespect to Manonmaniam Sundaram Pillai.
