It is a research group of computer scientists and mathematicians. With ten established academic posts and a large number of research students, it is one of the largest academic security groups in the world. The group has research links with international industrial and government institutions.

Research areas include the design and evaluation of cryptographic algorithms and protocols to international standards, smart cards, electronic commerce, security management, mobile telecommunications security, and applying security in other areas.
