Imerkhevi was historically one of the subregions that made up the medieval Georgian principality of Shavsheti. After the implementation of Turk-Soviet and Turk-Georgian border in 1921, Imerkhevi became a part of Turkish territory. The centre of Imerkhevi, Diobani (დიობანი), was renamed as "Meydancık
