The IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Society is a professional society of the IEEE.

History

The IRE Professional Group on Instrumentation was established on March 9th of 1950, which after the merger with AIEE in 1963 changed its name to the IEEE Professional Technical Group on Instrumentation and Measurement. In 1964 the group changed its name to the IEEE Group on Instrumentation and Measurement and again in 1978 to the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society.

Field of Interest

The society's Field of Interest, according to its website, "encompasses measurement systems and science," and "seeks to advance knowledge" in:

• "the theory, methodology, and practice of measurement, including, but not limited to, primary metrology, measurement uncertainty, and traceability;
• the design, development and evaluation of measurement systems, or any of their components, involved in generating, acquiring, conditioning and processing signals for the purpose of measuring quantities and phenomena of interest;
• the analysis, representation, display, and preservation of the information obtained from a set of measurements so as to best meet the needs of the end-user, whether human or machine; and through the establishment and maintenance of related technical standards."
