Academies

Since I.S. 145 has around 2,039 students according to the 2010-2011 Progress Report, it is divided into five academies, each focusing and emphasizing it's core values, for example, one focuses on teaching students about Math, the other emphasizes the Sciences, and so on. This was done in 2004, in the hope was that this would not only improve academic performance and boost low standardized test scores, but also strengthen ties between teachers and students, so that young teens who were enrolled did not feel lost.

The school is divided into 5 different academies, and are listed below along with brief description are- :
  • The Math & Business Academy: The Math & Business Academy focuses on teaching, as well as emphasizing the importance of Mathematics in society and business. It is heavily regarded as the toughest academy to pass, with it's heavy curriculum, tough teachers and deans. It occupies half the First Floor of the building (mainly the old wing) and the most of the Old WIng Basement. It is also in charge entire Math Department in the school, and setting the pace of math teaching around 145. It helps administer the State Math Exams around the school for grades 6-8, as well as administrating the Integrated Algebra Regents for qualified honors students around the school.
  • The Science & Technology Academy: The Science & Technology Academy emphasizes the Sciences and it's contributions to society. It offers a great variety of science orientated classes, and classes such as Math & English have science & technology integrated in it. It occupies most of the Second Floor Old Wing. It is also in charge of the entire Science Department in the school, and setting the pace of science teaching around 145. It helps administer the State Science Examinations around the school for Grade 8, and it plans on administrating the Earth Science Regents for qualified honors students around the school in June of 2012.
  • The Journalism & Media Arts Academy
  • The Law & Humanities Academy
  • The International Bridge Academy

Wings

The school is also divided in to two parts: The Old Wing and the New Wing.
The Old Wing is the original section in the school, having been around since the school's inception in 1953. It houses the School Library, Gym, Auditorium, Main Office, the Principal's and Nurses Office, as well as the main entrence. It also houses the The Math & Business Academy, The Science & Technology Academy, & The International Bridge Academy. The New Wing was constructed as a recent addition to help deal with overcrowding, completed in 1996. It houses modern classrooms, equipped with air conditioning, something the old wing lacks. It houses the school cafeteria, the Media Library (where the School Computers are available for use by the students), and Parent Coordinator's Office.
