He also played professional baseball in Korea, Taiwan and Japan.

From 2001 through 2004, De la Cruz coached for the Missoula Osprey (2001–2002) of the Pioneer League and Class-A South Bend Silver Hawks (2003–2004). In 2005 he started his managerial career with Missoula, where he won the PL pennant in 2006. The next year he led the Single-A Visalia Oaks to a 77-63 record, as well as a playoff appearance in the California League.

Before the 2008 season, De La Cruz was promoted to the Mobile Bay Bears of the Southern League. He will manage in Double-A for the first time during an eighth-year stint with the Diamondbacks organization.

In 2009, Hector De La Cruz will manage in Double-A for the second straight year, his ninth season as a coach/manager in the Diamondbacks organization. Last season, de la Cruz was the skipper for the Bay Bears and led them to a solid finish. In the previous season, de la Cruz managed the Single-A Visalia Oaks of the California League while leading the squad to a 77-63 record and a playoff appearance. He also managed at Missoula (Mont.) in the Pioneer Rookie League, where he skippered the Osprey to the 2006 League Championship.

Licey has won the "Serie del Caribe" 10 times. In an unusual situation during the 2008 season Licey finished second in the Dominican championship (and would not qualify for the series) but replaced Puerto Rico which was absent (Puerto Rico canceled their winter league for financial reasons). Licey won the series defeating Mexico, Venezuela and their Dominican rival the Aguilas Cibaeñas.
