Hyde Park grew slowly until the 1920s, during which time developers erected thousands of single-family houses and duplexes along its streets (many of which were replaced by apartment buildings in the 1950s and 1960s). During the 1960s, it became a predominantly African-American area, which it has remained into the 21st century.
