The property is or was also known as Essex Historical Society, Inc. and historically as Red Men's Hall because it served as an Improved Order of Red Men

The town voted to demolish the building in 1909, but it survived. Later, in 1954, the town established the Essex Historical Society to receive the property and to preserve local history.

The NRHP listing was for an area of 0.3 acre (0.1214058 ha) with just one contributing building.
