He was appointed to the present post on the 19 June 2009 after the UPA government's second consecutive victory at the Centre. He was preceded by Deepak Sandhu, a career bureaucrat and Dr Sanjay Baru, presently Editor at the Business Standard, New Delhi.

Family

Mr Khare is married to Renana Jhabvala, Chairperson of SEWA Bank and a senior member of SEWA and novelist Ruth Prabwer Jhabvala's daughter.

Mr. Khare has a son, Uday Khare, who is working with Amarchand Mangaldas, a leading Indian law firm, in Mumbai.
