 and available in the afternoon. It was launched on 25 March 1991. A Sunday edition, Metro Ahad was launched on August 19, 1995.

The format of the newspaper is tabloid. The change in demography resulted in a growing audience of young people who were looking for entertainment, shopping news, lifestyle features and news that interested them. Harian Metro met those needs in a most interesting and exciting manner by way of exciting editorial presentation.

The growth of Harian Metro was in itself a sensation. From 106,000 readers in 1993, the readership shot up dramatically to 2.2 million for Harian Metro and 2.4 million for Metro Ahad in 2009. The latest growing newspaper.

Today's at stands at readers daily that published Mondays to Sundays, Harian Metro grew from a single edition newspaper to a five-edition national newspaper able to reach people in the central region as well as the other States daily.

Harian Metro is a two-section daily incorporating the main news section and RAP (entertainment; the title means "Rentak Artis Popular", Variasi (thematic) and 1Klasifieds (Classifieds).

History

1991
  • On March 25, Harian Metro, the country's first afternoon Bahasa newspaper was launched. The price was 50 sen.

  • Mior Kamarulbaid Mior Shahid was appointed the first News Editor.

  • On June 26, Harian Metro first revamped.


1992
  • Ahmad Puah Onah was appointed Editor.

  • On March 25, the southern edition of Harian Metro was launched in Johor Bahru.

  • Juara Metro Sepak Takraw Championship was launched.


1994
  • On April 1, Zian Johari was appointed Editor.

  • On May 16, Harian Metro, Edisi Timur was launched.

  • On August 1, Harian Metro, Edisi Utara was launched.


1995
  • On August 29, Metro Ahad was launched.


2000
  • On July 17, Harian Metro was revamped with a new tag line 'Kini, Sini, Terkini'.


2001
  • On March 26, Harian Metro celebrated its 10th Anniversary


2002
  • On January 10, Harian Metro Editor, Zain Johari launced new page in Harian Metro for novel series issue by Kumpulan Karangkraf Sdn. Bhd. The new page will be published in Harian Metro for 51 weeks.

  • On February 9, the first "Kejohanan Bowling Terbuka Harian Metro" was launched in Kelantan.

  • On August 27, Harian Metro and Kolej Antarabangsa Sedaya (SIC) though "Tabung Biasiswa Sedaya-Harian Metro" launched RM1.25 million of scholarship to bumiputera students to further their studies at the college.

  • On December 20, The "Harian Metro Go Places" contest was launched by Harian Metro. The contest is open to media managers, planners, client servicing personnel, creative teams, advertising agencies and Harian Metro advertisers - people who normally cannot enter newspaper contests.


2003
  • January 11, Harian Metro launched the "Harian Metro Go Places" for northern edition. The contest aimed at increasing awareness of the paper and support from advertising agencies and clients.


2004
  • On January 8, Harian Metro launched "Personaliti dan Undian Gadis Metro 2004" contest at Cititel, Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur.

  • On January 27, Hisamuddin Aun, Berita Harian Group Editor launched new official web page for Harian Metro & Metro Ahad (http://www.hmetro.com.my) at Balai Berita, Kuala Lumpur.

  • On June 1, Berita Harian Sdn Bhd appointed Hafifi Hafidz as the new Executive Editor of Harian Metro and Metro Ahad, replacing Zian Johari, who was appointed Executive Editor of Berita Minggu.

  • On July 27, Harian Metro launched its weekly column called "Liku-liku Niaga". The column, jointly organised by Harian Metro and Pelangi Allied Corporate Consultants Sdn Bhd would appear every Tuesday in Harian Metro's Business section.

  • On August 18, Harian Metro launched "Harian Metro Goes Salsa" contest at the Telawi Street Bistro in Jalan Telawi 3, Bangsar Baru. Advertisers of The New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd can have their staff show off their groovy salsa moves.

  • On August 23, a new pullout of Harian Metro called Bintang and Variasi Metro (V-Met) was launched.

  • On August 30, "Susun & Menang" contest was launched. The contest, ending on Nov 7, is held in recognition of the support by Harian Metro's loyal readers over the past 13 years. Seven lucky readers of the Harian Metro stand a chance to win a Perodua Kancil 660cc.

  • On October 9, Harian Metro/Metro Ahad executive editor Hafifi Hafidz, was bestowed the Darjah Mulia Seri Melaka, which carries the title "Datuk".


2005
  • On January 1, the cover price of Harian Metro was increased to RM1.20. In Sabah and Sarawak, Harian Metro was sold at RM2.00 each.

  • On February 4, In conjunction with TV3's 2005 carnival, Harian Metro is offering a chance for visitors to appear on its front page. Comely teens will also have a chance to be "Gadis Metro" by submitting a 3R/4R photograph.

  • On February 23, "Personaliti Celcom Metro (PCM) 2005/2006" contest was launched. PCM is a collaboration between Celcom and Harian Metro and will run for a year. The audition will involve three phases: Applicants need to apply via SMS, call a number to record their talents or messages, take a picture of themselves and email it to a website.

  • In May, "Melancong bersama MAMEE - Harian Metro" contest was launched. The contest, offers RM20,000 and a trip to Turkey for the grand prize winner. The first prize winner will receive RM8,000 and a trip to Perth, Australia, while the second winner, RM5,000 and a trip to Seoul, South Korea.


2006
  • On June 6, be a citizen journalist with the leading Malay tabloid, Harian Metro, and its Sunday edition, the Metro Ahad. The two publications launched i-Metro, an interactive portal providing readers a chance to be the eyes and ears of their community.

  • On July 15, Harian Metro will have a new look. The publication will have a more stylish, colourful and reader-friendly layout following its revamp. The New Straits Times Press (M) Berhad group editor-in-chief Datuk Hishamuddin Aun said that the newspaper will continue to deliver punchy and entertaining articles in a light and breezy format. New sections focusing on celebrities, lifestyle, health and fashion have been added. Among the changes made are introducing new mastheads for Harian Metro and Metro Ahad, replacing Metro Ahad's Meta with Ekspresi and renaming Harian Metro's Bintang to Rentak Artis Popular (RAP) and V-Met to Variasi.
