Halomonas salaria is a gram-negative
Gram-negative
Gram-negative bacteria are bacteria that do not retain crystal violet dye in the Gram staining protocol. In a Gram stain test, a counterstain is added after the crystal violet, coloring all Gram-negative bacteria with a red or pink color...

Obligate
Obligate means "by necessity" and is used mainly in biology in phrases such as:* Obligate aerobe, an organism that cannot survive without oxygen* Obligate anaerobe, an organism that cannot survive in the presence of oxygen...

 piezophile
Piezophile
A piezophile is an organism which thrives at high pressures, such as deep sea bacteria or archaea. They are generally found on ocean floors, where pressure often exceeds 380 atm . Some have been found at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean where the maximum pressure is roughly 117 MPa...

, and requires pressures of 102 MPa to grow.

It is a new species described in a paper by Kwang Kyu Kim, Long Jin, Hee Chan Yang and Sung-Taik Lee in 2007 as a moderately halophilic
Halophile
Halophiles are extremophile organisms that thrive in environments with very high concentrations of salt. The name comes from the Greek for "salt-loving". While the term is perhaps most often applied to some halophiles classified into the Archaea domain, there are also bacterial halophiles and some...

, Korea. The description given of Halomonas salaria sp. nov. is:

"Cells are aerobic, gram-negative, non-spore-forming rods (0.8–0.9x1.3–1.7 µm). Colonies are yellow, smooth, translucent and circular with entire edges. Cells are motile with lateral/polar flagella. Oxidase-positive and catalase-positive. Growth occurs at 10–45 °C (optimum 25–30 °C) and at pH 5–10 (optimum pH 7–8). Growth occurs at salinities of 0–25 % NaCl (optimum 10–20 % NaCl)".
