Geography

Hagneck has an area, , of 1.83 km² (0.706566950224339 sq mi). Of this area, 1.2 km² (0.463322590311042 sq mi) or 65.6% is used for agricultural purposes, while 0.23 km² (0.0888034964762831 sq mi) or 12.6% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.23 km² (0.0888034964762831 sq mi) or 12.6% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.15 km² (37.1 acre) or 8.2% is either rivers or lakes.

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 7.1% and transportation infrastructure made up 3.8%. Power and water infrastructure as well as other special developed areas made up 1.6% of the area 10.9% of the total land area is heavily forested and 1.6% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 59.0% is used for growing crops and 4.4% is pastures, while 2.2% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.

History

Hagneck is first mentioned in 1353 as Hagneg.

Hagnek was part of the parish of Täuffelen. Suzerainty passed in 1398 to the Counts of Neuchâtel - Nidau in Bern (district Epsach

 in the prefecture of Nidau). The field of Hagneck., who had four houses in 1783, belonged to the Bernese
patricians (von Erlach, von May), as a lent-out stronghold of Nidau. Its inhabitants had a right to grazing Hägen, and rights of use in the forest of Hagnek: Those rights were upheld 1527 against the claims of the Ins population. Their activities consisting dominantly of cereal crops and fisheries.

Today's Hagneck

The municipality was created in 1840, but remained tied to Täuffelen in school and church matters. The Hagneck channel (1873–1878), which crosses the territory of the commune, the channel of the power station

(opened in 1899) and the network of drainage Länggraben (1925–1937) transformed the landscape, while allowing the cultivation of the former marshes. Today, agriculture, arts and crafts and the power plant occupy a third of the population. The other two thirds work outside (regions Biel/Bienne and Bern). In 1916 the railway-Bienne Täuffelen-Ins was inaugurated.
