Encyclopedia
HD 23079 b is an exoplanet approximately 114 light years away in the constellation
Constellation
In modern astronomy, a constellation is an internationally defined area of the celestial sphere. These areas are grouped around asterisms, patterns formed by prominent stars within apparent proximity to one another on Earth's night sky....

 Reticulum. The planet has mass
Mass
Mass can be defined as a quantitive measure of the resistance an object has to change in its velocity. In physics, mass commonly refers to any of the following three properties of matter, which have been shown experimentally to be equivalent:...

of at least 2.45 Jupiters, although only the minimum mass
Minimum mass
In astronomy, minimum mass is the lower-bound calculated mass of observed objects such as planets, stars and binary systems, nebulae, and black holes. Minimum mass is a widely cited statistic for extrasolar planets...

 is known since inclination
Inclination
Inclination in general is the angle between a reference plane and another plane or axis of direction.-Orbits:The inclination is one of the six orbital parameters describing the shape and orientation of a celestial orbit...

is unknown. The planet takes almost exactly two years to orbit the star at the average distance of 1.6 AU
Astronomical unit
An astronomical unit is a unit of length equal to about or approximately the mean Earth–Sun distance....

. The planet's orbital eccentricity
Orbital eccentricity
The orbital eccentricity of an astronomical body is the amount by which its orbit deviates from a perfect circle, where 0 is perfectly circular, and 1.0 is a parabola, and no longer a closed orbit...

is about the same as 109 Piscium b
109 Piscium b
109 Piscium b is a long-period extrasolar planet discovered in orbit around 109 Piscium. It is at least 6.38 times the mass of Jupiter and is likely to be a gas giant...

, HD 75898 b
HD 75898 b
HD 75898 b is an extrasolar planet approximately 263 light years away in the constellation of Lynx. This is a giant planet orbiting the star HD 75898. The minimum mass is two and a half times more than Jupiters, suggesting it is a gas giant. The planet orbits at 1.168 AU from the star, taking 1.1...

, and HD 69830 b
HD 69830 b
HD 69830 b is a Neptune-mass or Super-Earth mass extrasolar planet orbiting the star HD 69830. This planet is 10 times more massive than Earth, making it the least massive in the system. It also orbits quite close to its parent star and takes 82/3 days to complete an orbit. This is likely to be a...

at 0.102. The distance range from as close as 1.44 AU to as far away as 1.76 AU from the parent star.

The planet was discovered in 2001 by Tinney et al., who used doppler spectrometer to look for shifts of star’s spectrum caused by a gravity of the planet tug the star around as the planet orbits.
