In 1989, Gurgel Carajás had 75% of its market, against just 25% to its only option in Brazil, the Toyota Bandeirante. Since 1976 and 1990, to import a vehicle was out of law for Brazilians.
This success became over,on second semester of 1990. The Lada Niva came to Brazil in thousands. Gurgel Carajás' sells fell to almost nothing in just three months. The main mechanical problem of this vehicle was its weak transmission. It was also expensive, but until 1990, its only competition in Brazil, the Toyota Bandeirante was even more expensive than it. For Gurgel, until 1990, this vehicle was very profitable. In 1990, with imported cars available and in cheaper prices, as the Lada niva or far better quality, such as the Pajero and Land-Rover, Carajás' production became next to nothing in the last months of 1990.In January, 1991, the production of this Brazilian car became over. The end of production of this car was terrible for Gurgel. The company decided to produce only small cars and went to bankruptcy between 1993 and 1994. Just some hundreds of this vehicle are in Brazilians roads today.
