The island is served by a dozen of bus routes, with buses mainly running from and to the city centre of Guangzhou. Generally there are two types of bus service: Regular buses, operating similarly to buses in the city, stop frequently and it takes longer to ride; commuter express buses, which are dedicated to serve the university town, mainly utilize expressways and have less stops. Most of these express buses terminate at the old campuses of the universities. There are also shuttle buses provided by individual universities, which travel between the old and new campuses. These are usually reserved for the university faculty and staff only and may not be used by the public or students.
