The Boney M. reunion of 1988 had been a tense meeting between lead singer Liz Mitchell and the other three members. When Liz Mitchell also had a solo album out that she wanted to promote, she left the group in the spring of 1989. For the "Summer Mega Mix" video, producer Frank Farian employed the other three original members and replaced Mitchell with Madeleine Davis who previously had worked with the band as a backing singer on albums Boonoonoonoos

"Josephine Baker" appeared late 1989, co-inciding with the release of the "Malaika" remix single and the second remix album, but was subsequently withdrawn by Farian who promptly rushed Liz Mitchell into the studio to record a new official single "Stories" - with Liz Mitchell's new formation of the group which at that time also included Reggie Tsiboe
