.

The station was opened in 1924 as part of the tramway Lilleaker Line.

Along with most of the line, Gjønnes has been closed for upgrades since 1 July 2006 and its service is temporarily provided by bus. It will among other things, receive longer platforms which can accommodate trains with up to six cars like most of the subway system.

On 19 October 2008, there was an incident where the ground under one side of the station suddenly was pressed upwards by around 4 meters. This caused one track to turn over 90 degrees, while the other track suddenly was on a 3 meter tall, steep bump. It is believed this incident was caused by movement of the ground initiated by pressure from a nearby storage facility for rocks.
