Gaston is a canonical fictional supporting character and a villain in Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Introduced in the 1991 Disney animated classic, Gaston's desire to marry Belle leads him to evolve from a harmless, humourous buffoon to the primary antagonist of the film.
Origins Gaston was not a character in the original fairy tale. Disney claims to have added him to the film in order to create a heightened sense of danger as well as to showcase the theme of inner versus outer beauty.
However, there is a similar character in the 1946 French adaptation of the fairy tale, named Avenant. Avenant proposes to Belle and is also intent upon killing the Beast once he realizes that Belle is in love with the Beast instead of him. He is also involved in a fight with the Beast, which leads to his death.
Traits
Gaston is conceited, self-centered, and very masculine. He spends his time fighting, drinking, and spitting, things at which he is the town champion.
He believes that it is not appropriate for women to read books or think. Rather, he feels that women make better use of themselves as mere domestic slaves i.e. "little wives". For that matter, he does not believe thinking is a good use of time for anyone, not even himself.
Gaston is frequently seen in the company of his sidekick, LeFou, and the three "Bimbettes."

As Gaston believes he is the best in the town, he sets his sights on marrying the best - which for him is the most beautiful - woman in the town: Belle. However, she refuses his proposal. This humiliates him and hurts his ego.
He then attempts to throw her father into an asylum, unless Belle agrees to marry him. His plan goes awry, which is when he discovers that Belle is in love with the Beast.
He becomes jealous and decides to gather a mob to kill the Beast. In the ensuing fight, he stabs the Beast in the back, but ultimately falls from the castle roof - perhaps to his death. His death is only implied, but in some versions of the movie skulls flash in his eyes as he is falling to heighten this implication.
He was voiced by Richard White.

Gaston's character in the musical is indistiguishable from that of his character in the film.
In the Melbourne stage production of the film, he was played by Hugh Jackman.
In other media Gaston appeared in the television series House of Mouse, and was voiced again by White.
Gaston is notably absent from the Kingdom Hearts series, because of the appearance of his homeworld in Kingdom Hearts II.
