 gets its name from the neighbourhood in which it resides. The neighbourhood overlooks the North Saskatchewan River

 valley. In the river valley immediately below Garneau are the Kinsmen Park, the Kinsmen Sport Centre, and the John Walter Museum.

Other neighbourhood adjacent to Garneau are Queen Alexandra to the south east and McKernan

Today, there are increasing amounts of dwellings in the Garneau neighborhood that are high rise condominium

s in buildings with five or more stories and low rise apartments in buildings with fewer than five stories. Most of these are rented, making Garneau an attractive location for students at the University of Alberta to live.

Despite that, there are still some old French inspired homes roaming around, paying tribute to its Métis history.
