Franz Joseph Lauth was a German Egyptologist.

History

From 1842-1845 studied classical philology. In 1849 continued as a teacher in Wilhelms Gymnasium in Munich. In 1865 appointed professor at Maximilians' Gymnasium, he received the gold medal from Maximilian of Bavaria. From this recognization he was able to gain access to the collections at the court and library of Louis I

 and study the royal collections egyptian artifacts held within, later continuing to collections in Vienna, Trieste, Rome, Florence, Paris, London and Leiden (specifically the papyri). He contributed greatly to the newly founded journal of egyptian language and antiquities. In 1865 having contributed chronological Zodiakkreis of Dendera and Manetho, he was again honored with the Grand Gold Medal.  of the Egyptian-mediated collections. Some time later he began to be heavily criticized for the style of his writings,although continuing to be altogether involved in scientific discourse. In the winter of 1872/73 he toured Egypt (Cairo, Alexandria and Luxor) which led to him publishing Travel letters, about his experiences at these locations.Writings gathered to an increasing weight were matched be him being much less present in the relevant ongoing scientific debate.in 1882 having resigned from his office, he became a figure forgotten within his lifetime.
