Flatanger is a municipality in Nord-Trøndelag county, Norway. It is part of the Namdalen region. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Flatanger. Flatanger was separated from Fosnes on 1 January 1871. The municipality consists of almost 1,400 islands of various sizes.

Name
The municipality is named after a fjord (the last element is angr which means "fjord"). The first element is probably flat which means "flat", but in what meaning is unknown.
Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times. They were granted in 1990. The arms show three chevrons which represent the front of a boat.
