Ffynone

Ffynone campus is situated next to St. James’s Park in the Uplands area of Swansea.

Facilities in Ffynone House School include a learning resource centre, laboratories, gymnasium, a drama studio, a music room and two art studios in addition to two computer suites.

Classes are relatively small as is overall school size with around 200 students. All pupils follow a common curriculum considered compulsory by educational authorities up until the end of GCSE.

In addition to academic classes, pupils have access to sporting activities, together with debating, music, drama, dance as part of the curriculum and as extra-curricular activities. Some extra-curricular activities may be charged an additional fee.

2009 exam results


In 2009, Ffynone House School received 93% A*-C pass rate at GCSE. The school reinforced its reputation for outstanding achievement in the sciences with 96.4% A*-B pass rates in Chemistry and Biology.
The school received a 100% pass rate at A Level. The number of grades at grade A – C was 88%. This follows figures of 80% in 2007 and 87% in 2008. Ffynone continued to achieve a high percentage of top grades with 59% of the pupils achieving the top A Grade, following 60% in 2008 and 57% in 2007.

2010 exam results


In 2010, Ffynone House School received 97% A*-C pass rate at GCSE. Pupils from the school scored an excellent 61% A*/A grade pass rate. The school reinforced its reputation for outstanding achievement in sciences, languages, humanities and mathematics: Art gained 72% A*/A grades; Biology pupils achieved 77% A*/A grades; Chemistry pupils received 81% A*/A grades; French achieved an exemplary 86% A*/A grades; pupils studying German achieved 75% A* grades; Music pupils achieved 83% A*/A, and Latin achieved an excellent 100% A*/A grade record. Pupils studying English Literature achieved 90% A*-B grades.
The school received a 100% pass rate at A Level for the second year in a row. In an exceptional year for high grades, pupils gained 50% A*/A grades and an outstanding 77% A*-B grades. The number of grades gained at A* – C surpassed expectations again with 88% of students achieving them.
The School received the best results across the Cognita Group.

Sport

Ffynone has a tradition of extra-curricular sporting activities. Sports include table tennis, football, rugby, hockey, cross-country and gymnastics, taking place at lunch-times and after school. Fixtures against other schools, both independent and state schools, take place on a regular basis. In the area gymnastic competition, Ffynone pupils have won medals for the last three years in succession and been successful in the Afan Nedd Tawe Cross Country Competition as well as in hockey and swimming events.

A minority of students (although impressive for the schools overall size) gain honours at county, south Wales and National level every year. In the past pupils have made it to the Commonwealth Games.

Science

Ffynone House School offers Chemistry, Biology and Physics as independent subjects throughout the School. Pupils from the School regularly participate in science based competitions and have won the South West Wales Chemical Olympiad Competition in 2004, 2005, 2009-10 and 2010-11. In 2009 the School Chemical Olympiad team came third in the UK in the Royal Society of Chemistry 'Top of the Bench' competition .

The history

Ffynone House School was opened in 1973 by a Swansea Businessman Mr Marshall David.
The School was a former convent school, St Winifrede's Convent School, run by nuns from 1887-1969 and throughout the Second World War .

The School's motto is "Where Individuals Matter".

Previous mottos were "Non Sibi Sed Omnibus" ("Not for one's self but for all") and "Endeavour-Achievement-Excellence".
