, A Pleasant Shade of Gray revealed a much deeper and darker mood in chief songwriter Jim Matheos' style. Though conceived as a single 50-minute song, the album is divided into 12 tracks, each one a "Part" of the song/album.

A live two-CD set, Still Life, was released in 1998. The first disc contained "A Pleasant Shade of Gray" performed live in its entirety, while the second contained a complete version of "The Ivory Gate of Dreams" from the 1988 album No Exit along with other songs. Bernie Versailles on additional guitars, and Jason Keazer on keyboards accompanied the band on this album, while still keeping Joey Vera as the bassist on this record. In January 2011, an announcement was made that Fates Warning guitarist Jim Matheos and former Fates Warning vocalist John Arch formed a band called Arch / Matheos. They started recording the drum tracks on January 12, 2011 and will continue to record into February. The three other musicians involved are Joey Vera
