and post-doctoral teaching and research institute established by European Union
member states to contribute to cultural and scientific development in the social sciences, in a European perspective. By statute, the EUI is an intergovernmental organisation.

. Every year, some 140 recent graduates are enrolled for the four-year doctoral grant. Students who have completed and successfully defended their thesis before an international academic examining board are awarded a research doctorate.

The interdisciplinary centre, the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, pursues research into the key political themes of contemporary European societies, and brings together specialists in given themes, favouring international and comparative aspects of research. The Max Weber Programme is Europe’s largest postdoctoral programme in the social sciences and is funded by the European Commission. In 2010 the Academy of Global Governance was created.
The EUI Library has an extensive collection of traditional resources (books, documents and journals on paper or in microform) and a rapidly growing digital collection. The Library collections contain approximately 3,000 current journals on paper, access to approximately 8,000 e-journals and approximately half a million volumes in law, economics, history and civilization, and social and political sciences.

Organisation
The main bodies are the Academic Council, the Research Council, the Budgetary Committee and the High Council (composed of the Member State delegates). The President of the Institute is former EU-Parliament President Josep Borrell Fontelles, who is assisted in his duties by the Institute's Secretary General, Ferrara Pasquale.History
