Erode Municipal Council came in to existence in the year of 1872 and was upgraded to Special Grade during the year 1980, with an area of just 7.4 km². In 2007, this Municipal limit covering only the Central Business District had a population of about 1,59,728 and it has been upgraded as a Municipal Corporation with effect from the very first of the year 2008. The Erode City Municipal Corporation extends over an area of around 110 km² between River Cauvery on the East and NH-47 Bypass on the West, containing a population of about 5.5 Lakhs as per 2001 census. The total urban sprawl is divided into 4 Zones, each containing 15 Wards and each Ward containing nearly 10,000 of population and an average of 1.5lakhs in each Zone.
