It was started in the late 1990s by a group of Lancashire based Christians from various evangelical

 churches with the aim of bringing Christians together for teaching, worship and fellowship. The event regularly attracts around 2,000 people and is hosted at Prestons Guild Hall. The ethos of Encounter is strongly evangelical, charismatic and contemporary. The event embraces the creative arts and multi-media technology. Although not associated with "Encounter", the American Camp Encounter has been influenced by this event.

Each year a speaker from outside of the area is invited to come. For 2007 the guest speaker was the American emerging church
