 (NARA) which was officially established in 2000.

Initial planning and development of ERA began in 1997. The President and Congress supported ERA with appropriations.

In 2008, ERA accepted its first records from four pilot agencies. These agencies were:
  • Department of Commerce, U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Department of the Navy, National Oceanographic Office  (NAVO).
  • Department of Energy

NARA entered into partnerships with private companies to digitize thousands of traditional paper records. In time, this digitized material will be made available through the ERA.
