Kimball is married to the former Evelyn Bee Madsen and they are the parents of seven children and grandparents of 28 grandchildren and have 5 great-grandchildren.

Prior to joining the faculty of BYU Kimball was a law professor and chairman of the Curriculum Committee at the University of Wisconsin Law School.
