The Earl of Charlemont was a medium-sized passenger ship that sank on its first voyage in the mid 1800's. It sailed from Liverpool on the 13th March, 1853 with 366 passengers plus crew, the captain was William Gardner. Their first port of call in Australia was to be Port Phillip before taking the majority of his passengers to Sydney. On Saturday 18th June, 1853, the ship was wrecked off Barwon Heads, Victoria after striking a reef which now bears its name, Charlemont Reef.

On Saturday 18th June, 1853, the ship was wrecked off Barwon Heads, Victoria after striking a reef which now bears its name, Charlemont Reef. It has been the subject of much research, a book was written about the ship and the Bellarine Historical Society holds a complete list of all passengers who were on board.
