e-IR contains blogs, essays, reviews and articles written by students, academics, journalists and policy makers. It also occasionally republishes stand-alone book chapters. e-IR presents its material with the express aim that all content is accessible to a general audience, whilst retaining the expertise of academic scholarship.  license and has an open submission policy and a liberal peer-review policy. While it also publishes shorter opinion pieces its original essays are considered refereed publications by the academic community in International Relations.

The site has diversified to include a series of mini-journal publications, including a publication on the Responsibility to Protect (November 2011) that was recognised as a leading publication in its field by the International Coalition for the Responsibility to Protect due the roster of R2P experts involved in the publication, such as: Thomas G. Weiss, Ramesh Thakur, Alex Bellamy, and Gareth Evans.

The site also runs a student essay award, which has been in operation since early 2010.
