In 1993, Rolf Disch Solar Architecture
and coach Volker Finke
created the initiative to change their field into a solar soccer stadium. Photovoltaic panels were installed on the roof and SC Freiburg was the first soccer team in Germany with solar power. This ecological step reinforced Freiburg's image as the "Solar City" and demonstrated the need for renewable and sustainable energy in all locations and venues.
