. In 2006 it had a population of 282.
The kibbutz was established on 30 October 1946 by the Zara'im kvutza
, which was largely composed of immigrants
from Austria
and Germany
who had arrived before the start of World War II
. The group had congregated in Ein Harod
in 1942 in order to prepare for establishing a new village. The new kibbutz was named after the Levite
city which was located in the area belonging to the Tribe of Issachar
(Joshua 21:28).
In 1947 some land nearby was purchased by the Jewish National Fund
. During the 1948 Arab-Israeli War
the kibbutz was moved to the new site, initially known as Dovrat Illit (Upper Dovrat).
