Delta County was created by the Colorado legislature on February 11, 1883, out of portions of central Gunnison County

According to the 2000 census, the county has a total area of 1148.52 square miles (2,974.7 km²), of which 1142.11 square miles (2,958.1 km²) (or 99.44%) is land and 6.42 square miles (16.6 km²) (or 0.56%) is water.
