. After graduating from high school, he attended the College of Southern Utah on a basketball
scholarship for one year. Burgess then went to Brazil
as a missionary
for the LDS Church. After returning to Utah
, he graduated in 1970 from Brigham Young University
with a degree in business management.
From 1997 to 2000, Burgess presided
over the Brazil Belo Horizonte
East Mission
of the church. He has also been a member of a stake presidency and a bishop. At the April 2004 church general conference, Burgess was accepted
by the church as the first counselor to Charles W. Dahlquist II

Burgess married Annette Christensen in the Provo Utah Temple
