He was assistant District Attorney from 1971 to 1972. He was appointed assistant County Solicitor in 1973. He was named County Solicitor in 1975. In 1976, he was named interim county commissioner of Washington County. He was elected to a term in his own right in 1979. During his time as commissioner, he helped consolidate county government into the Court House Square project and helped develop Southpointe

. In 1983, he was elected judge of the Courts of Common Pleas in Washington County. He was named President Judge on January 1, 2003. He died in 2004.
