Rubin-Vega was born in Panama City, Panama, the daughter of Daphine Vega, a nurse, and Jose Mercedes Vega, a carpenter. Her stepfather, Leonard Rubin, was a writer. She began her musical career as the lead singer for the Latin freestyle
